A religião:

WAITING FOR A BUS THAT FAILED 2,000 YEARS AGO: The Failed Apocalypse and the Great Shift of the Goalposts.

The Reason Project 03/08/2026

Before you scroll past, ask yourself: If Jesus promised his disciples he would return in THEIR lifetime, why are YOU still waiting in 2026?

Let's go through this step by step. Keep an open mind and follow the logic.

PART 1: WHO WAS JESUS ACTUALLY TALKING TO?

In Matthew 24, Jesus wasn't giving a TED Talk to the year 2026. He was sitting on the Mount of Olives answering a private question from four specific disciples — Peter, James, John, and Andrew (Mark 13:3).

They asked: "What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:3).

Jesus looked them in the eye and answered them. Not you. Not me. THEM.

He told THEM: "When you see the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place, let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains" (Matthew 24:16)

Wait... flee to Judea?

If you're reading this from Lagos, London, or Los Angeles, are you supposed to buy a one-way ticket to Judea? Of course not. He was talking to the people standing in front of him.

He told THEM: "You will be persecuted, handed over to councils, beaten in synagogues" (Mark 13:9-11).

Synagogues? Councils? When was the last time YOU were beaten in a synagogue? Again — first-century Jewish disciples. Not you.

He doubled down and told THEM: "Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom" (Matthew 16:28)

And the knockout punch: "You will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes" (Matthew 10:23)

Are the disciples still walking through Israel in ancient sandals knocking on doors? No? Then either Jesus failed, or he was talking about THEIR generation.

PART 2: THE SIGNS WERE FOR THEIR TIME.

Jesus gave THEM a checklist of signs to watch for:

1. The Gospel must be preached to the whole world as a witness, then the end will come (Matthew 24:14).

Paul — writing in the FIRST CENTURY — claimed: "The gospel... has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven" (Colossians 1:23).

Paul believed the mission was complete. The end should have come.

2. Many false messiahs and antichrists will appear (Matthew 24:5, 24).

John, writing in the FIRST CENTURY, confirmed: "Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come" (1 John 2:18).

John said "this is the last hour" — 2,000 years ago. Not "the last hour is coming." He said IT IS.

3. This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened (Matthew 24:34).

"This generation." Not "that generation." Not "some future generation." THIS generation. The one standing in front of him.

PART 3: PAUL THOUGHT HE'D BE ALIVE AT THE RETURN.

Paul's letters drip with urgency because he genuinely believed his generation was the last.

He told the Corinthians: "Because of the present crisis, I think it is good for a man to remain as he is. Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife" (1 Corinthians 7:26-27)

Why? Because he thought marriage was pointless when the world was about to end.

He added: "From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not" (1 Corinthians 7:29).

Not because Paul hated marriage. Because he believed Jesus was coming any minute and there was no time for honeymoon planning.

He told the Thessalonians: "We who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4:15, 17).

Paul said "WE who are alive." Not "those who will be alive in 2,000 years." He included himself. He expected to be caught up in the air.

The early church sold their houses and shared everything (Acts 2:44-45) because they thought the end was days or months away. Not millennia.

PART 4: THE DAMAGE CONTROL.

So what happened when that generation died off and Jesus was still a no-show?

People started asking the obvious question: "Where is the promise of his coming?" (2 Peter 3:4).

They noticed the same thing you should notice: "Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."

No signs. No return. Just... life going on.

Peter's response? Classic spin.

Instead of admitting Jesus missed the deadline, he:

- Changed the subject to the flood (2 Peter 3:5-6).

- Said God is just being patient so more people can be saved (2 Peter 3:9).

- Then dropped the infamous line: "With the Lord a day is like a thousand years" (2 Peter 3:8).

Wait. So when Jesus said "this generation," he secretly meant "maybe 2,000+ years"? That's not what "this generation" means in ANY language.

Even Jesus' own parable admitted the delay. In the story of the ten virgins: "While the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept" (Matthew 25:5).

Even the Bible admits the groom was delayed. The early church KNEW something was wrong.

PART 5: "BUT NO ONE KNOWS THE DAY OR HOUR!"

Believers always runs to Matthew 24:36 — "No one knows the day or hour."

Okay, let's use your brain for a second.

Imagine a husband telling his 3-month pregnant wife: "I promise I am buying you a brand new car before you give birth! Now, I don't know the exact day or hour it will be delivered, but it will happen before this baby arrives."

30 years pass. The baby is now a 30-year-old adult with a mortgage. The wife turns to the husband and asks, "Where is the car you promised?"

And the husband smiles and says: "Hey, remember, I told you that 'no man knows the day or the hour'!"

You would call that man a fraud! Saying you don't know the exact hour within a specific timeframe (a single generation) does not mean the timeframe itself vanishes!

Jesus said "this generation will not pass away" BEFORE he said no one knows the day or hour. The "day or hour" was the unknown moment WITHIN the promised timeframe — not a license to extend the deadline for 2,000+ years.

That's like a contractor promising to finish your house "this month" and when December 31st hits, he says, "But I never said which HOUR!"

PART 6: THESE LETTERS WERE NOT WRITTEN TO YOU.

Here's the part that makes modern preachers uncomfortable:

Paul wrote to the Galatians. To the Corinthians. To the Thessalonians. To the Philippians.

He did NOT write to you in 2026.

When he said "we who are alive," he was talking to the Thessalonian church in the first century. Not to your WhatsApp prayer group.

Reading Paul's letters like they were written yesterday is like reading your great-great-great-grandpa's letter about surviving a famine and stretching "we shall overcome this" over your own life in 2026. It wasn't for you. The "we" was them.

Jesus made a promise to his disciples that he would return in their lifetime. The signs were for them. The warnings were for them. The "flee to Judea" was for them.

Every apostle believed it. Paul wrote like he was packing his bags for heaven. John said "it is the last hour." The early church sold everything and waited.

Then they died.

Then their children died.

Then their grandchildren died.

And 2,000 years later, preachers are still telling you to "keep watching" — while moving the goalposts.

The promise was made to a specific people, in a specific place, at a specific time. It failed. The Bible itself records the skepticism that followed (2 Peter 3:4). The damage control is right there in the text.

So... keep waiting if you want. But at least be honest about what you're waiting for.

² E suceder o tal sinal ou prodígio, de que te houver falado, dizendo: Vamos após outros deuses, que não conheceste, e sirvamo-los;

Eles passaram no teste.
